The Great Power of Words

I’m going to try to ask myself throughout each day: Did my words today build up or tear down? Did my words encourage or discourage? Would God be pleased with what came out of my mouth today? Did they heal or hurt?

We have great power in the words that we speak and the people that we impact. Whether it involves my children, husband, friend, or a complete stranger, I want to be more mindful of this as I go through each day. I pray that the words of my mouth and the thoughts on my heart are pleasing to God.

I received a nice surprise in the mail today. A hand-written note from a complete stranger. It had been mailed to my church with my name on it. It was from a nice couple who had visited our early service. This simple act of kindness – these simple words – meant the world to me and I have no doubt that God spoke through them to me. I needed to be reminded of the power of words. Words are an incredible gift God has given us. I want to try harder to honor God and use my words in a better, more pleasing way.

  2. I totally agree! Our words can definitely leave impressions on others (and vice versa)....I was reading another mommy blog today (a very popular one at that) and was very disheartened by the way that the author and some of her readers "spoke" about the topic at hand. In fact, it made me not want to read anymore.... Your blog on the other hand is so encouraging and I always leave feeling uplifted instead of discouraged or disheartened. Thank you for being a shining light! :)

  3. This is so true. Sometimes I think people forget how much words can mean to someone, positively and negatively. And snail mail! There is nothing like a simple, "just thinking of you" note coming to you in an envelop with a stamp.

thank you for sharing this wonderful post :)

  4. Linked here from Kristen's blog. You have a lot of good posts. Really liked this one. I posted an article on "Crafting Words" on Family Fountain, about 3 posts down, if you get a chance to visit.

The post about your daughter not being invited to a party - the toughest pain for a parent is to see their kids hurting and we can't remove the pain. We are going through that with a senior in high school. Blessed in the child (yours, and hopefully ours) who has a support system at home for those times. We can't prevent the pain, but we can provide the comfort and room for growth. Good post. Good blog.
